v22.6 - On The Ball

Morning folks,

{slurp}

Have you ever heard the saying, "Keep your eye on the ball"? It is obviously an old baseball phrase used to help players bat. Since it is a normal reflex for people to close their eyes when things are thrown at them batters will seldom swing too early or too late if they don't keep their eye on the ball.

So what does that have to do with me? I don't play baseball and most likely never will at a professional capacity. This same phrase can be used in many areas of our lives. For example, "Keep your eyes on the prize" is another saying that is quite popular. All of these phrases have the same underlying meaning; if you want something keep it in focus.

Let's put this in a real world example; what if you are looking for a new job? You spend your weekends and evenings searching the web for work using the various job search sites on the net to find the perfect job. You spend hours, days and weeks looking, researching and never once send out a resume or make a phone call. Is that job just going to find you? In most cases it won't and unless you're one of those highly sought after individuals, you shouldn't expect a cold call or email from a company wanting to add your knowledge and expertise to their own.

The point of all this is to say if you REALLY want something in life whether it's a new job, a new car, a new house or whatever, you need to put the effort out there to get it. Most of the time these things just don't fall into your lap and most of us are not that lucky to win the lottery.

Children are a PERFECT example of keeping our eyes on the prize. They focus all their energy and attention on something and rarely do they give up until they've gotten what they want. My kids don't always get everything they want, but you can bet that if they want it bad enough and they work hard for it and are determined enough, they will most likely get it.

Anyway folks, some food for thought today. Hope you enjoy it and hopefully it puts some thoughts out there.

Cheers,
Al
