v12.4 - Roll up the Rim Again

Morning folks,

{slurp}

Today's musing is brought to you in part by Tim Horton's Extra Large Double Double. Also by the letter 'K' and the number '12'.

With that, let's get it on.

{slurp}

It is that time of the year again. That's right, it is 'Roll up the Rim to Win' again! If you think way way back to this time last year, you will remember I started my daily musings around the same time as the last Roll up the Rim contest. That can only mean one thing.... we're approaching the one year anniversary of Musings over Coffee!

While I find this upcoming date exciting, I can't help but feel a little disappointed and sad that I wasn't able to get a musing out every single day like I said I would. While certain things happened over the last year which made my musings not possible, I thought about it every day.

{slurp}

But enough of that, it is 'Roll up the Rim' time again! This year, Tim Horton's has a nice prize line-up:

30 2006 Toyota Rav4s
100 50" Panasonic Plasma TVs
500 Cash prizes of $1000
10000 Broil King barbecues
and over 27 million coffee and donut prizes!

Of course, I only have a 1 in 9 chance to win something and this morning's musing is coffee number 3 since the contest started. So far, I'm 0 for 2.

{slurp}

I have no doubt I'll win something, I just hope my luck is better than last year. :)

So March 1 is less than a day away. How does that make you feel? Personally I'm glad spring is almost here. While I enjoy the winter months most times, I hate the winter months post January because it is just an annoyance. Prior to January it is fine because of Christmas and New Years, but after that the snow should go away. We've been very lucky this year (or so I'm told). There have only been a couple big storms (one of which shut down the city of Halifax for the day) and the snow hasn't stuck around long enough to be a problem. The weather has been windy and fairly mild for this time of year. Although since last week it has gotten a lot colder here and I find myself wishing for spring to get here.

My counterpart (and brother-in-law) is working from home today. I know he gets these musings so I won't badger him on his slackness. My current job is quite flexible in whether or not we want to (or need to) work from home. I've done it a few times already and I find (in most cases) I get a lot more work done. It would almost make sense for companies to take a more proactive approach to employees working from home. You save money on office space (heating, cooling, lighting, power, etc) and you will get more productivity from your employees.

While this isn't always possible in some work places, when you're working with computers and connecting to systems all around the globe, does it really matter where you sit? I can get access to the work network from any internet connection on the planet. While I find that connection a little slow at times, it is my prefered way to work. I like being able to sit in the comfort of my own home and working from my own PC. Also, you can choose to goto work in your underwear if you like and eat, drink and do pretty much anything you want while you work. Want to blast that stero of your favorite toons or play that video game that has you madly addicted? I can do all that when working from home. I can even goto the bathroom and not have to worry about Grunty McGrunterson sitting in a stall next to me praying to God that he lives through his shit. Gross!

{slurp}

I bet if you let people working from home more, you would find employees using less sick and vactation days. Why? Because when you're out in public a lot interacting with other people, you tend to pick up virus easier. Especially when you work on a team who sits together all the time. One person comes in with a cold and then it starts manifesting itself in others on the team. Before you know it, someone is yelling at someone else as they roll up their sleeves ready to knock some heads because Jim brought a cold to work and now Tim has it and wants Virii revenge! If a person worked from home, they could keep that cold or flu there with them and not pass it on to others. Instead of having everyone on a team getting sick, you would have one person and the cycle would stop there. In most cases anyway.

{slurp}

Enough about working from home. I'm only jealous that Rick gets to work from home today and I have to sit here (sick btw) and work in a stuffy office.

{slurp}

Coffee is gone, lets see if I won anything....

{rollllllll}

DAMMIT!!

Oh well, a virtual slurp before I sign off for the day. Everyone remember to keep fit and have fun. Loafing around all day will only leave you feeling glum and blue. Remember to be kind to your fellow humans. Chances are they hate what they're doing as much as you are. :)

{virtual slurp}

Cheers,
Al
