WoW Open Beta

So I signed up yesterday for the new WoW Open Beta. For those who don’t know what WoW is, sheesh :) WoW stands for World of Warcraft. Any gamer should remember the Warcraft games and how popular they were. Blizzard has come out with their first Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) entitled World of Warcraft.

All I can say is “WOW” :)

I started up a Human Warlock last night on the Beta Server 13. I made it to level 6 while casually playing for about 3-4 hours (not bad). I was able to have enough cash on my to do all my necessary training and advancements. The questing system is simply amazing in this game. If you’re used to other MMOGs and they way they do their questing; WoW will blow your mind :)

I have my little Imp pet (just like in the Single/Multiplayer Warcraft games) and him and I set out for some adventure :)

Within the span of that 3-4 hours I was reunitied with some old gaming friends from Dark Age of Camelot. I also completed about 11 quests AND I had a tour of the Alliance capital city. In WoW, it is Alliance vs. Horde. Each side has equal races/classes they can choose from, and you fight :) Similar to how the RvR aspect works in DAoC, except it is only 2 sides and they are equal. There are only 2 classes that are special to each side, all the other classes are shared.

The graphical world is stunning, the music and sounds take you in unlike any other game. The emotes are hilarious :) When you type lol, your character bursts out in laughter holding her stomach (yes, my toon is a chick). You can flirt, dance, kiss, hug, cheer, etc, etc, etc.. You even have “vocal” commands. I can do a /cheer which does a simple animation of me cheering, or I can do a /v cheer which makes my character yell out a cheer :) /v silly will make my character tell a random joke (which can be heard). Character make hand gestures and express emotions while they interact with the world. Overall, the game has so many “little things” that make you laugh :)

I was walking around the start village when I came across this oddly familiar looking character walking around. I click on him to be greeted with that familiar nazal sounding “Hello".. I nearly fell out of my chair with laughter. I watched this NPC (non player character) for a few minutes as he walked. He headed to a tree where he proceded to start chopping wood. I couldn’t believe it, it was like being inside the old Warcraft games :) After chopping wood for 30sec, the Pesant turned around with an arm full of wood and walked back to the village. As I said before, its the little things :) This toon had no purpose to the game other than to give us old Warcraft fans something to smile about.

You older players will remember how angry the characters in Warcraft would get if you kept clicking on them. Well, Blizzard has brought that over to WoW as well :) I had guards getting angry at me as I continuted to interact with them over and over :) Just for laughs I fired up an Orc player on another server to test this over interaction :) What do you think I was greeted with?? You guessed it… the famous “STOP POKING ME!!!!” :)

I urge you guys to give the game a try. Last I heard they had closed down the open beta signups, but if you get a chance to get on and take a look, please do :) If not, you will want to pick this game up and enjoy a free month of play. As with almost every other MMOG, it is a pay to play on a monthly basis.

Blizzard has an excellent track record when it comes to making games. Their attention to detail is unmatched. You can’t go wrong with a game from Blizzard :)

Life

Life is defined as

The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism.

The characteristic state or condition of a living organism

Sit and ponder that definition for a bit while I go and grab a coffee…

Life can throw us some fairly interesting curve balls sometimes. I sometimes sit and ponder why people make things so difficult. You have an employee sitting at his desk in an office building. He is working on something that needs to be finished by the end of the day. Already this person is in a state of stress as they try and accomplish their task. An email arrives from their boss stating there will be some restructuring in the orgainziation. Stop. Now that employee is unable to concentrate on the job at hand. They sit and ponder the email and think of all the other people in the office who also stand a chance of losing their jobs. There will always be change in any organization. There will always be people who are let go due to cost reduction based on the economy. People take news like this as the END of life as they know it. Will that person be able to find a new job? Nobody knows; it depends on so many factors you can never say yes or no with all certainty.

The company I work for is going through some changes as well. They are implementing new policies and changing the structure by which we work. There are a LOT of changes happening and quite a few coming. Everyone’s first impression is layoffs. People always think the worst of things which leads to mass chaos around the office. Even if one person takes that home with them and loses sleep, they effect the team as a whole. Employees who stand around the water cooler discussing changes in policy are causing more and more grief. Speculations are made and rumors are started. Next thing you know Lucy Lu over in accounting is getting the axe because forgot to put the new cover letter on the TPS report. Oh, and she all of a sudden has 5 kids to feed because her good for nothing husband left her last year.

Life…

Bringing your work life home with you is a dangerous game. I have a difficult time with this as my work and my home are somewhat related. I am the primary money maker in my family and if my job is affecting me, my home feels it. I try to leave as much at work as I can, but we’re ALL human. I’m reminded of a story told about a man who came home from work every day and hung something on a tree outside his house before going inside. He did this everyday; but when someone went to examine the tree, there was never anything there. In the morning the man would goto work and pick up the “invisible” thing he left on the tree. When the man was finally asked what he was doing, he replied simply “I’m hanging my worries and cares from work so I don’t take them home with me". So many times we let those cares and worries creap into our homes. I can honestly say first hand, it isn’t good for the family life.

So what is the answer?

There is no answer! Each and every person is different. We cope differently, we adjust differently and adapt differently to situations around us. Joe Samson over in Sales may find out about the layoffs and go home and kill himself. Lucy Lu will go home and have a nice meal with her boyfriend (who has NO kids by the way) and forget about it all until the next day. Everyone is different and nobody is perfect. I am not qualified to give advice, but I can tell you from my personal experience something that can really help to cope with these issues. Everyday when I get home from work I’m greeted by my family. To see my children look up at me and smile those big smiles means more to me than anything in this world. My wonderful wife who I love so much, has always been supportive of my work woes and has always lended an ear when I needed to talk. I apologize to them all the time for acting too stressed or too tired after getting home. Having someone to talk to REALLY helps when you’re feeling down. If things are going bad at work, talk to a friend or a loved one. It makes a HUGE difference when you talk to someone outside of the situation. After you try and explain the situation to them, you realize that maybe 50% of the “rumors” floating around the office are true. You begin to analyze the facts based on the gossip and you will eventually figure out the truth. Lucky Lu can’t possibly have 5 kids, she’s only 25 years old, she has never talked of them and she has NO pictures up in her cubical.

Not much of a rant, just expressing my thoughts and ideas digitally to the world as I see them. Family will always come first in my life and I will never let that change.

Cheers,

Al

Bad Weekend

So this past weekend was Thanksgiving here in Canada. It’s hard to imagine how such a “thankful” time can turn out so bad. I had a lot of hopes/wants for this weekend, but everything took a turn for the worst.

I won’t get into the gritty details, but my problems this weekend had to do with family and the lack thereof over this special holiday. For starters, there seems to be a LOT of debate on when Thanksgiving day really is. Let me put it to rest:

On January 31, 1957 Parliament issued a proclamation to fix permanently the second Monday in October as “a day of general Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.“

So my family was right, and I was wrong :) Not the first time and won’t be the last. Growing up we had always celebrated Thanksgiving on Sunday. This would give us time to rest and relax on Monday. This is more of a family tradition and not (come to find out) a common one. My sister threw a nice thanksgiving dinner on Sunday and my wife and I went over to partake. My kids were at the mom-in-law’s place despite my want to have them with me that day. The kids love their grandma and I didn’t have the heart to tell them no. A mistake I won’t make again.

One thing led to another and everything ended in a pile of miscommunicated misunderstood shit. There were a few hurt feelings and a lot of empty bellies. Basically, shit hit the fan and everyone was caught in the spray.

A lot of hidden “secrets” were brought out and a lot of revelations made. Yesterday (Monday) we spent the day together as a family. We played, we laughed and made up for missed time on Sunday. I still feel this weekend was a total disaster, but I’m thankful it happened. This year, I was thankful for the truth coming out and the feelings being shared. It will help a lot in the future.

Cheers,

I want GMail

Funny, I don’t even care if I get a GMail account, I just want one because I can’t have one :)

For those who don’t know, Google has setup a new service call GMail. Like HotMail and the other web based mail services out there, GMail is offering it’s customers 1GB webspace. Unfortunatly it’s by invite ONLY and this loyal google user didn’t get one. Each person who was invited to sign-up on Gmail was given 6 invitations to give to friends. SOOOO.. if you have one you wouldn’t mind parting with (hint), drop me an email at ralic -at- shaw -dot- ca and I’ll give you the info to set me up.

I want GMail!! :)

Getting Cable

Cable Internet that is :)

Up until recently I’ve been a DSL subscriber with our local telephone company. I have rarely had any issues with them and their speeds have been fairly fast and consistant (or so I thought). I spoke with a friend of mine at work who has been using cable internet for a number of years and was telling about this new “Extreme” internet package. Up until last week, I was unaware the cable company provided static IP address with their internet (something I need to host). Their prices at first glace were quite disturbing, but after putting it all together and bundling it with my current cable bill, the price difference is on $2.00.

The quick and dirty:

DSL
2.5Mb Download
1Mb Upload
20Gig transfer limit/month
2 Static IP addresses

Cable
5Mb Download
1Mb Upload
40Gig transfer limit/month
2 Static IP addresses

It doesn’t look like much, but when you consider I’m at 2.5Mb right now and I’m getting (on average) 50-100KB/sec download there is a big problem. I’ve polled several friends of mine who are on cable internet and they average around 200KB/sec transfers when download. On good nights, they get 400KB/sec +

I do a lot of hosting on my system. Currently I host 11 domains and 36 websites. My need for speed is great :) The cable internet will be connected today. It will take a few days to propigate the DNS across to the new IPs. Once the switch is made, I’ll be making a phone call to my phone company and cancelling my DSL. I will be doing a lot of tests over the next few days. I want to compare the speeds and get some benchmarks down. I’ll post here when I get all the data collected :)

Rants and the Ranters

Ok, I’m sick and tired of the ranting :) This coming from a guy who runs his own Rant Site :)

As most of you know I play a game called Dark Age of Camelot. I have been playing this game for about 3 years now and I have seen a lot of stuff happen. For those who don’t know what DaoC is, it is an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) where 3 realms are in constant struggle to claim dominance. They battle in an environtment like PvP but know as RvR (Realm vs Realm). The company that created this unique style of PvP is Mythic Entertainment.

I’ve seen a LOT of rants regarding class imbalances, realm imbalances, combat imbalances, etc. I’ve seen people bitch and complain about the Midgards. I’ve seen them complain about the Hibernians, and of course the Albions. This game has taken a lot of turns over the past 3 years. Only those who have been playing for as long as I have will understand the power shifts and see a definate pattern. The problem with DAoC is population imbalances.

Let’s say you have a server with 3 realms. Let’s say 10,000 people decide to play on this server as their “Main” server. Let’s say 50% of those individuals decide they like the old Knights and Arthinian Lore and decide to join Albion. Right away you have a population imbalance. Population is a huge deal in RvR, and typically the realm that has the most players wins the battles. Right now, since the release of Mythic’s latest expansion (New Frontiers) we (The Albions) have been winning. There are a lot of “reasons” why, but I feel the biggest one is population. On almost every server, Albions outnumber both Mids and Hibs combined (that the 50% I was talking about). As a result of this, players (Hibs and Mids) are crying Nerf!

We (Albs) have a lot of things going for us these days. We have ALMOST always been the underdogs in RvR warfare; fighting against enemies who seem unbeatable. I remember going out into the frontiers and being overwhealmed by the numbers of our enemies. Now that the gauntlet is on the other hand, they enemy can’t take it. It’s sad TBH. I think the game could have had a lot more potential with New Frontiers. Instead it’s turned out to be a bunch of cry babies who want things back they way they were or they’ll /cancel. I say let em! This game is about change! Plain and Simple!

You either keep up, or fall behind.

Some People

Gaming communities can be a great thing. Like Real Life, they can also be pretty bad.

I won’t name names, but there is this certain individual who I know in-game that I used to always consider a friend. I remember when he first started playing DAoC and he was in my old guild (Hands of God). We used to hang out together all the time and I assisted in his climb up the exp ladder to 50 on his first toon. I’ll call this guy Bro for now.

Today I was on an ML2 raid led by Sash. I felt the raid was going well, everything was in order and we managed to get from start to finish (minus solo step) in just over 2hrs. We had some difficulty getting the final encounter down, but that’s expected with the amount of lag we’ve been getting in ToA these days. During the raid, Sash went LD and as a result, BG Loot was off. I picked up a 98% qual Trident during one of the kills and was asked to give to Sash. I attempted several times to give to him, but he was always in a trade session. Then he ran off and we continued on with the raid. He said in the BG he wasn’t going to worry about loot.

People started to bicker about this and finally he said to hand the Trident to him. I went to hand it to him yet AGAIN, and he was in a trade with someone else. I tried several times and then a battle broke out (Step 9 of ML2). During the fight, the trident was forgotten about and we moved on to step 10.

After all was said and done, we decided to head back to Stygia to roll for loot. I decided to take off as nothing dropped I would be interested in and I had to get my kids ready for my daughter’s 2nd birthday party. Then over BG someone asked about the Trident and wanted to roll on it. Sash mentioned he did not have the Trident and my name came up as having it.

Everyone thought I was gone, when really I was just getting my ML2 credit finished off. Bro decided it would be best to slam me in BG and call me a Jerk (thinking I logged or was gone). After a few other “slams” from other players, I piped up in BG and told them I was still there. I ported back to Stygia and gave the Trident to Sash and went about my business.

I had totally forgotten about the stupid 98% qual RoG piece of shit, but everyone gets so bent out of shape over something so fucking stupid, it makes me want to just give up on the game.

Bro (who I thought was a friend) and I always got along and had some great times in the past. We’ve gone through some hard times and loads of good times in-game. I’m not sure when the tables turned, but it would seem I’ve offended a lot more players than just him. Since the general repsonse I received from the BG was I was unreliable and disloyal.

Perhaps it is time I move on.

ASCII Fun !!

This guy has done his site completely in ASCII! He’s done an amazing job and even has a few ASCII videos up from your favorite movies like Spiderman, Lord of the Rings and Matrix. Stand back from the screen while watching, they look better the further away you are.
